Machine-embroidery works where the drawing is done in stitch: direction, density and underlay decided as design variables rather than left to the software's defaults.
Drawing in thread
Embroidery digitising is usually treated as a conversion step: hand the software a vector, accept what it produces. The results look like a printed graphic that has been forced through a needle.
These works treat stitch as the drawing medium. Stitch direction is chosen so that light catches the motif the way the design intends; density is tuned to the substrate, dropping on knit and rising on denim; underlay is designed rather than defaulted, because it is what stops a satin stitch from sinking.
Teaching it
The same material is taught as a workshop for the Textile and Fashion Design programme — computerised embroidery from first principles through to producing finished pattern files in PE-DESIGN.
